For Parents with Teens

We’ve all been affected by acne at some point in our lives. If you are the parent of teenage children you should understand how difficult acne can be for teens. Acne can affect a child’s self image and their social life. In severe cases it can lead to extreme embarrassment, withdraw and depression. Parents should let their children know they are willing to help with acne problems if the child wants it.

Even if they don't want to talk about it, dealing with acne is likely to be one of their major concerns. Accordingly, a teenager is trying everything he or she is able do to control acne.

Discussing your own experiences with acne may help them relate or give them a broader perspective on the condition. Adults know that acne will not last forever, and it will usually clear up in time if given proper attention and treatment. Yet this is only a small comfort to teens who are currently suffering from an embarrassing breakout of acne. Talking to your teenager about acne can be difficult because they might be embarrassed by their appearance and would rather pretend it isn’t an issue. The key is to be supportive, understanding, and discrete. At the same time, parents must be more than just moral support for their children. Parents also need to be a source of information and advice about how to treat acne.

One of the more effective approaches is to learn as much as possible about the various types of acne and understand how they can be treated. This can go a long way in providing better guidance for your children when facing decisions related to their acne treatment. You will be better able to help them choose acne treatments and perhaps able to determine if it is appropriate to consult a dermatologist.

Don’t assume that just because you had acne as a teen that you know everything about it. Many things have changed since then. Advances in scientific research on acne related matters continually find new information. Also, new medications and new methods of acne treatment have been developed. Today many of the most common acne conditions can be remedied quickly. Because there are such a variety of approaches, knowing what is available will help you in deciding the best option for your child.
